Kyiv (/’ki:jIv/ KEEV,[10] /ki/v/ KEEV [11] Ukrainian pronunciation of Kiyiv is Kiyiv. It lies in the north-central Ukraine, along the Dnieper River. It was home to 2,962,180 people as of January 20, 2021. [14] This makes Kyiv Europe's seventh most populous city. [15]

Kyiv is a major industrial, scientific, education, and cultural centre in Eastern Europe. Many high-tech industries and higher education institutions are located in this city, as well as historical landmarks. There is a large network of public transport and infrastructure in the city, including the Kyiv metro.

According to legend, the city's name derives from Kyi, one its legendary founders. The city, which is one of the oldest in Eastern Europe, has been through many stages of fame and decline over its history. It was probably a commercial hub since the 5th century. Slavic settlement along the great trade route from Constantinople and Scandinavia, Kyiv was a tributary to the Khazars [16] until it was captured by the Varangians (Vikings), in the middle of the 9th century. The city was made the capital of Kievan Rus' (the first East Slavic state) under Varangian rule. The Mongol invasions of 1240 decimated the city. This resulted in the loss of most of its power over the next centuries. It was a marginal provincial capital in the outskirts territories under the control of its powerful neighbours, Poland, Lithuania, and Russia. [1]
