Oklahoma City (/[email protected]@-/ (listen),) is the capital and the largest city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Oklahoma County. [8] It ranks 20th in United States cities by population and the 11th biggest city in the Southern United States. Following the 2010 census, the population increased to 687 725 by 2020. [5] Oklahoma City's metropolitan area had a population 1,396,445,[9] while the Oklahoma City-Shawnee Combined Statistical Area had a total population of 1,469.124[9], making it Oklahoma’s largest metropolitan area and municipality by population.

Oklahoma City's boundaries extend into Canadian, Pottawatomie, and Cleveland counties. However, most of these areas are suburb tracts or protected rural zone (watershed) areas. It is the eighth largest city in the United States, based on area, including consolidated city-counties. Houston is second, but not including consolidated areas. It is also the second-largest by area of all state capital cities in the United States after Juneau, Alaska.

Oklahoma City is home to one of the largest livestock markets in the world. The largest sector of Oklahoma City's economy is oil, natural gas and petroleum products. The capital is located in the middle an active oil field. There are oil derricks all around the city. Tinker Air Force Base is home to a large number of federal workers, as well as the United States Department of Transportation’s Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center. These centers house the offices of the Federal Aviation Administration (and the Transportation Department’s Enterprise Service Center).
