Kresge Auditorium, which is inscribed above the main stairwell, was established in 1955 as the \"meeting house of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\" It was designed by Eero Sairinen, of TWA Flight Center fame. Kresge attracts visitors from all over the globe as an example of thin shell concrete structures. The original roof was covered in smooth, bright white orastone. It was then covered with lead sheeting and a mesh made of stainless steel wire before being replaced with the copper roof we have today. Ironically, Saarinen originally desired a copper roof but no one knew how to attach it on this type of structure. Kresge's interior houses a 1,200-seat performance room, 200-seat theater, and rehearsal rooms. These spaces are used as primary performance venues for MIT Music and Theatre Arts productions, as well as by a variety of student organizations.
