Washington, D.C., which was formerly the District of Columbia, is the capital and the only federal district of the United States. It is situated on the east bank the Potomac River. This river forms the country's southwestern and southerly borders with the U.S. states of Virginia and Maryland on the remaining sides. The federal district was named after Columbia, the female personification of America, and named in honor of George Washington, the Founding Father of the United States and the first president of the United States. The U.S. Federal Government and many international organizations are headquartered in the city, making it a major political capital. [11] The city is one of America's most visited, with more than 20 million people visiting it in 2016. [12][13]

The U.S. Constitution allows for a federal district to be under the sole jurisdiction of Congress. Therefore, the district is not a part or any U.S. state. On July 16, 1790, the Residence Act approved the establishment of a capital district along the Potomac River close to the country's East Coast. In 1791, the City of Washington was established to serve as the nation's capital. Congress held its first session in Washington in 1800. The federal district was officially established in 1801, a territory that had been part of Maryland and Virginia. Congress returned land that Virginia had ceded to it in 1846. It also created a single municipal government in the remainder of the district. Since the 1880s, efforts have been made to make the city a state. A bill for statehood was passed by the House of Representatives on 2021. [14]
