Is it possible to create great art by studying nature or the great art from the past? This gallery brings together highlights from the RA Collection.

This free exhibit is open to all visitors without a ticket.
* The free display will be available until 9 p.m. on Friday nights.

What is the secret to great art? Sir Joshua Reynolds was the first president of the United States. He believed that the past art was a great source of inspiration.

He encouraged aspiring artists at the RA Schools to read his Discourses on Art and study the works of great masters for as long as they are available. [...] Learn nature with the masters in your group. Consider them your models and your rivals.

The Collection Gallery includes work by early Academicians. It also contains many of the RA’s earlier examples of art such as Michelangelo’s Taddei Tondo, a 16th-century replica of Leonardo’s Last Supper, and casts of important classical sculptures, such as the Belvedere Torso.
