Scottish manufacturers are realising that investing in Automation and Robotics technology can increase productivity and lower costs while improving precision and flexibility and eliminating human errors. More flexibility allows manufacturers to create more products, and develop customized products that can be automatically manufactured.
Manufacturing Automation and Robotics is evolving quickly and becoming more available. Costs of industrial robots have dropped dramatically, as well as the time required to pay back their investment. Automation and Robotics technologies do not always lead to unemployment. Germany and Japan are two of the countries with the lowest rates of unemployment in the world.
By releasing workers from repetitive, often dangerous work, they can be retrained to take on more productive roles. They will also have the skills needed for an automated and advanced approach to manufacturing.
BDO, an accountancy and business consulting firm, conducted a recent survey that found 87% of UK businesses had automated a critical business process in the past year. One fifth view automation as the most important priority for investment over the next five-year period. A quarter of companies are already using robotics, and a third have integrated artificial intelligence into their daily operation. Automation has been embraced by the manufacturing sector, with 93% automating a key process within the last year. However, other industries are also adopting the technology.
